12 Days of Xmas – Christmas Crafts

christmas craftsChristmas is nearly here.

And I LOVE Christmas!

I don’t love trying to fit in time for shopping or the crowds and craziness of other shoppers, but I love the Christmas spirit and celebrating Christmas.

On the 1st day of December our tree and decorations go up. Every year it’s so exciting to me to get all of the decorations out and place them around the house.

I especially love opening up all of our hand made decorations again.

For many years I’ve made home made Christmas ornaments or decorations and added them to our collection. Most of them have become my favourite decorations of everything we display each year.

This years new addition to the collection is the 12 Days of Christmas wall hanging I finished earlier in the year.

It was quite a different craft to those I have done for the past few years. I haven’t done a lot of stitching and have stuck mostly with quilting, crochet, scrapbooking and sewing.

I really enjoyed the challenge of doing something entirely different and I’m so proud of the results. christmas craftsHere’s pictures of each section, so you can see some close up detail because the picture above is pretty hard to see.christmas crafts

I like the fact that this hanging has a feel of being a treasured, family decoration already. There’s just something tradition and heirloom-ish about hand stitched crafts like this.

I wonder what it will mean in years to come? Ever since I started crafting, the thought that our children will one day (hopefully) also get more years of enjoyment out of these modern heirlooms has spurred me on when I’ve had moments of low motivation.

When it gets handed down to one of the children, will they appreciate it and look at it as special because it was made by their Mum. Or will it seem like an unfashionable, budget craft that they leave in the box in lieu of flash, modern decorations? I know that will be their decision but I also hope I can impress upon them, in their younger years, the value of home made items so they can enjoy them more in their adult years.

Woah, well that got a bit sentimental! Sorry about that.

Anyway, I’m loving enjoying this hanging this year and am already thinking about next years Christmas Crafts so I can begin them early enough to get them finished in time. I’m not sure, yet, what I’ll be making but you’ll definitely see it here once it’s done : )
