Knitted Baby Gifts

babyfeetWhen I had Lil Miss P, one of my best friends and his wife also had their little boy.

We shared our journey of pregnancy with yoga classes and long texts and catch ups about our impending labours and then, in the middle of the night after our tots were born, our desperation at having two wide awake babies or our insecurities about every parenting decision we had made to that point.

Scroll forward 3 years and with the arrival of number two for us, these same friends also had their second baby.

We’re keeping in sync with our families and it’s been really nice to have close friends with kids at the same stages. We share trials and tribulations and fun play dates.

When I found out they were having another wee boy, I wanted to create another special hand made gift for him.

For their first wee guy I made this Road Trip Quilt as a (hopefully) treasured personal gift.

I knew they had plenty of blankets etc from their first go round though so I wanted to gift them something they didn’t already have. I got an idea from a very loved, knitted stuffy their first wee boy has. His beloved toy goes everywhere with him and is a necessary bed fellow.

So, the new baby should have the same, right?

I turned to my usual first point of reference, Ravelry, and came across the awesome patterns by No Knit Sherlock, that I’d filed in my library. In particular the cute little Bon Bon pattern.

I had some of my hand dyed yarn in a lovely turquoise with subtle speckles, which I thought would be great for a wee boy’s bunny so I cast on and got knitting.

Now I have to confess, although this was an easy knit, knitting stuffies is not going to be a regular thing for me. It’s so different to knitting clothing items. Lots of tiny little rows and with my naturally tight-ish gauge my hands really felt the tension in the smaller sections.

But I had fun bringing Bon Bon together and when he was done, he looked pretty darn cool with his extra large feet and his big floppy ears.

bunnyWith Bon Bon finished I had yarn left over so I decided to add one more hand knit gift to the package, that also included a rattle and a beautiful soft merino swaddle and matching hat.

Mara at Orange Knits released her Rose City Roller sock pattern in baby sizes. Too cute!

So I knit up a sweet wee pair of new born socks to go on their way with Bon Bon.

babysockI love to give handmade gifts, and I really hope that our friends enjoyed receiving them too.

Now time to plan for the next ones!
